Horse Painting

WILD HORSES PAINTING
Some of you may (or not) have noticed that I recently changed my blog header.  I have however stuck with horses.  I love horses, I love just watching them grazing peacefully in a field.  To me there is little else so magical about the very essence of a horse.  Just being around them seems to bring an inner peace and strength.  I have had horses since my teenage years, and it appears that I am destined to have them awhile longer.  But that is a whole other story which shall be told in the not too distant future.
My previous blog header - also horses

The painting (that is now my blog header) sits in our home entrance.  If you view my 'About page', there you will see a photo of it on my wall.   It is quite large (over a meter wide).  I prefer painting big canvases.  I did the background in a pale wash, and then used only a palette knife onto the canvas for the horses.  I wanted to capture the freedom of horses,  and using a palette knife forces the artist to be looser on the canvas.  The entire painting is done in acrylic.  The "arties"out there keep trying to persuade me to change to oils,  but quite honestly - it's the smell of oil paints that puts me off.   Everything else about oils is great... but that smell! (horses smell great - by the way!)
Wild Desert Horses - Acrylic on Canvas
My painting of horses is adapted from a photo of the wild horses which live and survive in the Namib desert of Africa (Namibia). These horse are truly remarkable the way they have adapted to the desert environment.  It is estimated they have been running wild in the area for the past 100 years or so, since the early 1900's.  The breeding groups are usually in groups of 10 or so horses with a couple of stallions, mares and foals.  The top mare (female) runs the show (of course she does!).  There are also bachelor herds of males, learning how to interact and compete for a breeding herd.
